China Unicom aim to build 50,000 5G base stations this year

On October 17, Wang Xiao Chu, chairman of China Unicom, revealed at the smart ecological cooperation conference of China Unicom held today that the goal of building 50,000 5G base stations this year has been mostly completed.

He added that 5G networks are being debugged and launched in various cities. After the official opening, the joint construction with China Telecom has doubled China Unicom's 5G signal coverage.

On September 9, China Unicom and China Telecom signed a cooperation agreement on the framework of 5G network co-construction and sharing, under which the two operators will share and build an access network with different 5G frequencies allocated by the government. This will contribute to the efficient construction of 5G network, reduce the cost of network construction and operation and maintenance, and improve the efficiency of network benefits and asset operation.

From the perspective of users, when the debugging is completed, 5G users of China Telecom can find and use the 5G network within the coverage of China Unicom's 5G base station.Conversely, China Unicom 5G users will also be able to use China Telecom's 5G network. This is equivalent to nearly doubling the popularization speed of 5G base stations for China Unicom and China Telecom, and thus improving users' experience of 5G network accordingly.

At the meeting, China Unicom also released a new smart ecological strategy, and officially launched the "unicom enabled" ecological cooperation brand. Mai Yan Zhou, vice general manager of China Unicom, said that 5G has brought vast new space for smart home industry, big video industry and pan-smart terminal industry, and China Unicom will focus on building relevant ecology around these three industries.
